Previous Innovate Award Winners

2014 Innovate Award Winner: Jacksonville Transit Authority (JTA)

The Challenge: Each county in Florida were creating their own bus route schedules, websites, and eligibility requirements. This uncoordinated system was inconvenient and confusing for passengers and not to mention expensive to operate.

The Solution: JTA created a technology called TransPortal, which was implemented in order to automate the coordination of trips.

The Results: The TransPortal technology created one shared scheduling database and one website for all transportation information, while maintaining the secure separation of client and trip information. This made bus trips more efficient for everyone.

2013 Innovate Award Winner: Coast Mountatin Bus Company (CMBC)

The Challenge: After the 2010 Olympics CMBC was facing a major problem; they had too many operators in the spring months, and not enough operators in the summer months. The situation was compounded by reduction in anticipated system growth due to budget constraints.

The Solution: CMBC’s Process Manager, Alex Gerchikov, offered the solution to use Trapeze software (fixed route scheduling and run-cutting solution BlockBuster), to reduce the length of runs and put more operators back to work.

The Results: By changing the length of runs, CMBC was better able to manage unscheduled overtime premiums and idle time. The balance between overtime and idle time improved greatly. Both have decreased and their fluctuations are now predicted with ease. CMBC’s innovation in predictability and consistency has generated a cost savings of almost $3 million annually, and is now a sustainable business practice for CMBC.
