Paratransit Inc.: Becoming More Productive
Paratransit Inc., Sacramento, CA recently combined mobile data computers and the Magellan Navigation System with the Trapeze system to create an intelligent transportation system (ITS) more efficient and responsive to riders’ needs. With the integrated system, Paratransit can accurately track services provided to riders, reduce denials, nearly eliminate dependence on expensive cab services to meet rider overflow, and increase the number of shared rides provided. Drivers can input a destination address on a keypad near their steering wheel without having to hunt through paper maps to search for the next rider, and staff is kept updated on the most accurate time and location of every vehicle in the fleet through AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location) technology.Results
With the integrated system, Paratransit, Inc. is able to optimize the scheduling of trips and use vehicle capacity more effectively. The company has experienced an average 7% per month increase in trips requested and trips provided, and have been able to maintain their passengers per hour productivity while the capacity denials has dropped from 3% to under 1%. In addition, Paratransit, Inc. has almost eliminated the practice of using expensive cab providers for rider overflow.
Future Technology
Paratransit is always looking for the newest and most efficient ways to offer its clients the best rides and most convenience. As Paratransit looks to the future, client service will continue to be a top priority. An Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system will soon be deployed, enabling riders to confirm/cancel and book trips 24 hours a day, seven days a week using the telephone. The IVR system will also provide Paratransit with an opportunity to enhance their value to riders through a real-time ‘ETA’ (estimated time of arrival) service
