Icelandic Public Transportation Provider Chooses Trapeze Planning and Operations Solution
Reykjavik-based transport company Strætó recently undertook a thorough modernization of its service to encourage use of public transportation. As part of this process, Strætó chose an IT solution by Trapeze Group.
ÅRHUS, DENMARK, February 20, 2005 — Strætó, the public transportation provider in Reykjavik, Iceland aims
at attracting more riders on its buses –a big challenge in the country with the second highest car-per-inhabitant
rate in the world. In support of this initiative, Strætó has chosen a planning and operations system developed by
Trapeze Group.
“Our current planning and operations systems are not up to date and do not support our planned development
efforts,” said Strætó Managing Director Ásgeir Eiríksson. “We need a modern IT solution that will meet future
requirements and optimize vehicles and services, giving us the flexibility to adjust our services to passenger
requirements.”
Strætó is in charge of planning and operating public transport in Reykjavik and six surrounding municipalities with
72 of their own buses, 32 leased buses and 280 employees. The passenger potential for the company is more
than 180,000.
As well as introducing an electronic payment system, Strætó will modernize the entire route network. The current
35 lines will be reduced to 19, of which six will be high-frequency lines that will operate mainly on wide
boulevards where traffic runs more smoothly. “The new route network planned with Trapeze will provide better
service for the general public, thus making public transportation more attractive,” explained Eiríksson.
The implementation of the Trapeze system will begin in March, and the system is expected to be in full operation
when the timetable is changed on June 12.
To manage the project implementation, Strætó has appointed the experienced operations and project manager
Einar Kristjansson. “Implementing and commissioning the planning and operations solution in three months will
be quite a challenge,” said Kristjansson. “However, I have a lot of experience with the Trapeze system. And for
this project, we have more time than the last time I was in a similar situation.” In 2001 Kristjansson implemented
a Trapeze operations system for a Danish bus company in just three weeks.
