Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) for School Buses
GPS-based automatic vehicle location (AVL) technology has been in use for years in commercial truck fleets and public transit organizations, but is only recently being adopted by the student transportation sector. Interest in this technology has been driven in the past by safety concerns and the many other intangible benefits AVL provides. In the current funding climate, however, it is critical that organizations understand and communicate the significant operational savings that can justify an AVL investment on economic terms alone. This paper looks at the business advantages an AVL system can offer school districts and contractors in the form of greater efficiency and lower operating costs. This paper is designed for student transportation professionals who seek a more detailed understanding of the role AVL can play in their organizations and offers some models for estimating ROI and investment recovery times.
